Sean Horsfall of Len’s Cove Marina in Portland, Ontario is a big Game of Thrones (GOT) fan and requested “some Lighthouse magic” for a #SummerisComing2017 campaign. He wanted to run a series of eblasts, social media and paid internet ads to coincide with the start of GOT Season 7 in early July 2017. His idea was to have some fun with a parody for the most common phrase in the series, “Winter is coming.”
We sent a Mastercraft eblast with “Game of Zones” and “Don’t be a Wake Walker and Settle for Just One Sweet Spot” to go along with the Mastercraft Surf Boats promotion. Social Media posts with other familiar phrases like “Gather Your Fleet,” “The Lake is Warm and Full of Boaters,” and “Claim Your Throne” with a closeup of a boat helm were posted and have generated a lot of fan engagement.
We used fonts similar to the show, put the Len’s Cove logo on a ‘house’ banner, antiqued a map of Big Rideau Lake, used the dragon shadow from the famous newspaper ‘interruptor’ ad from season two, and made a throne from waterskis.
While the campaign was centered around iconic imagery and phrases from the popular HBO Show, it was generic enough that even non-GOT fans got the message and responded in greater numbers than usual.
